When I was a kid, my Mom always did fun & silly things for each & every holiday. I am certain that I have her to credit for this holiday freak flag of mine. Even though she worked 12 hour shifts as a detective (&many days much longer than that), she found a small way to let us know she was thinking about us & that she was celebrating the holiday, no matter how small, with all of us.
One way she did this was by turning our milk green on St. Patrick’s Day. My mother left for work long before us kids were up for school, so she would often do things that she knew we would discover in the morning to make our normal school routine a bit more magical. On St. Patrick’s Day, we would wake up to a fresh gallon of green milk for our cereal & a brand new box of Lucky Charms. She’s a sucker for a theme. It runs in the family.
I decided to kick it up a notch. Since I work from home & the only bad guys I’m hunting down are kitchen & bathroom germs, I have a little extra time to add some Mom magic.
All you’ll need for this is some milk, a glass cup for prime magic viewing, & some food coloring. I was out of green, but I had blue & yellow on hand. Place a few drops of coloring in the bottom of the glass cups. You can leave these out overnight if you want. When it’s time to fill the glass with milk, it will turn green right before your eyes! My boys are still young enough that the only possible explanation is magic & I receive plenty of oohs & aahs as I mentally stitch another badge on my Mom sash.
For extra fun, throw in a green paper straw. I have loads of these because I cannot resist them when I find them at the dollar spot (thanks, Target). Plus, they are so versatile for crafts & other recipes, I love having them on hand. And because my Mom raised me to be theme-obsessed, I’m planning to share a fun rainbow cookie recipe in the next week or so which would go perfectly with this magical green milk, but store bought chocolate chip cookies work just as well.
Green milk tastes better. This is science. Because my boys drank this milk down like their lives depended on them sucking every last minuscule drop from their cups.
