How to Organize Your Family Recipes

Food is my love language. It’s how I best communicate my love towards my family and friends. There is no greater compliment to me than a request for seconds. I put love into everything I create. It’s a gift I received from my grandmother. Whether she was whipping up chili from scratch or reimagining leftovers, the woman loved people with food. No spontaneous visitor ever left with an empty belly because the woman could pull together a three course meal within minutes of any impromptu arrival. After her passing, I’ve found myself wanting to connect with her old recipes, recreating foods that used to bring me comfort like her No-Bake Oatmeal Cookies, Classic Christmas Sugar Cookies, and Sunday Pot Roast Dinner. Recently, my grandfather gave me a rubberbanded stack of recipes, all with her handwriting and notes. Corners tattered, the papers stained and worn, the hand written recipes are precious treasures to my family and me, the people who she loved so fiercely and brought together time and time again with her food.

My intention is to frame several of them for display in my kitchen and gift several to family members over the holidays. The recipes are special to my family, so I’ve also been researching how to preserve them, giving us all access to them, and I discovered CreateMyCookbook.com. The website allowed me to load all of her tattered recipes into a cookbook of my own. I was able to hand type some, and I utilized their WeTypeIt service, where I simply took a photo of one of the recipe cards, and uploaded it to their site, where they typed it for me. Within hours I was able to access the recipes and add them to my cookbook. They offered several professionally designed templates (I chose the country theme) and several binding styles to fit my budget and preference. As for the recipes themselves, I was able to add photos, format the pages, and completely customize the cookbook to my preference. CreateMyCookbook.com has given me the option to keep the original hand written cards for preservation while also allowing me to have access to Grandma’s recipes to make again and again.  My cookbook should be here in about a week and I’m excited to add Grandma’s Cookbook to my collection. As a type-a organization junkie, I’m thrilled that I’ve found an option to organize family recipes, my clippings from magazines and newspapers, and other miscellaneous recipe collections.
