Preheat oven to 400℉. Line a dutch oven with parchment paper.
In a medium bowl, whisk together buttermilk and egg. Set aside.
In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, baking soda, and salt. Cut in the butter using a fork, your fingers, or pastry cutter until mixture forms into pea sized crumbs.
Add egg/buttermilk mixture and fold dough together until too stiff to stir. Dough will be crumbly.
Transfer dough to a floured surface and with floured hands work into a ball. Knead for roughly one minute or until all flour is incorporated.
Transfer dough to prepared dutch oven. Using a sharp knife, score dough with an X about 1/2 inch deep.
Bake uncovered for 50 minutes until bread is golden brown.
Remove from oven and allow to cool for 10 minutes before transferring to wire rack. Serve warm, room temperature, or toasted.
